W wielu metropoliach osiedla wielopiętrowych bloków z prefabrykatów budowano tylko na dalekich obrzeżach. W powojennej Warszawie można je było wcisnąć prawie wszędzie i chętnie to robiono. Zdominowały stare kamienice i kościelne wieże, dopiero w ostatnich latach zostały przyćmione przez biurowe i hotelowe drapacze chmur. Dla Nicolasa Grospierre’a (www.grospierre.art.pl), fotografa o polsko-francuskich korzeniach, to jeden z najulubieńszych tematów.

In many cities pre-fabricated tower blocks were generally built in housing developments on the edge of town. Post-war Warsaw offered innumerable opportunities to put them everywhere, and this was gladly done. The skyline was dominated by old apartment buildings and church spires which have only recently started to be overshadowed by high-rise office buildings and hotels. This is one of the favorite motifs of Nicolas Grospierre (www.grospierre.art.pl), a photographer of Polish-French heritage.

Większość twoich ulubionych bloków przeszła w ostatnich latach modernizację. Gdzie można je jeszcze oglądać w pierwotnym stanie? / Most of your favorite tower blocks have been renovated in recent years. Where can we still see the real thing?
Tak, są ocieplane i modularne elewacje znikają pod warstwą styropianu i farby. Polecam wycieczkę na Osiedle Prototypów w okolicach ulic Gotarda i Bokserskiej, które zaczęto budować w 1959 r., obok fabryki prefabrykatów zwanej Fabryką Domów. Badano tam empirycznie jak w ramach jednego systemu prefabrykacji osiągnąć jak największą różnorodność architektury i układów mieszkań.
Lubię też najstarszą część wielkiego osiedla na Ursynowie Północnym z lat 70., przy stacji metra Ursynów. Jest tam przytulnie i kameralnie, drzewa są już duże, a mieszkańcy pielęgnują przydomowe ogródki. Podobnie jest też na Sadach Żoliborskich czy na osiedlu Szwoleżerów.

Yes, many are being insulated and the modular facades are disappearing under a layer of styrofoam and thick paint. I would recommend an excursion to the housing development Osiedle Prototypów near the Gotarda and Bokserska St., which were built in 1959 right next to a factory producing pre-fab elements. It was here that they conducted empirical research on the diversity of architectural styles and apartment layouts that you could achieve with one type of pre-fab material. I also like the oldest part of the big development in North Ursynow built in the 1970s, near the Ursynów metro station. It has this homey and cozy feel, the trees have grown in and many of the tenants have ground-level gardens. There is a similar atmosphere in Sady Żoliborskie or the Szwoleżerów neighborhood.

Co cię tak urzeka w blokach? / What’s the fascination with the tower blocks?
Bloki są jedynym naprawdę masywnym kształtem w mieście, te na Osiedlu za Żelazną Bramą są nawet bardziej masywne niż sąsiadujące nowe drapacze chmur przy alei Jana Pawła II. Dla mnie ciekawe jest to, że niby wszystkie wyglądają tak samo, ale gdy fotografuję je i robię wielką odbitkę, dopiero widać detale, którymi się różnią.

They are really the only truly massive objects around, the buildings in the Za Żelazną Bramą neighborhood are even more massive than the new skyscapers being built nearby on Jana Pawła II Avenue. It’s fascinating how they supposedly are identical, but it is only when I photograph them and make a big print that I can appreciate the details that make them all different.
